Health Funds

Having private health insurance (i.e. belonging to a health fund), enables people to claim back a percentage of their health care expenses (a rebate), as long as the practitioner they see is registered as an Eligible Provider with their fund.

Around 35 funds currently operate in Australia and most allow their members to claim rebates for naturopathy and western herbal medicine. For more details on Govt registered health funds, see

NHAA full members practicing within Australia can apply for health fund provider status via the NHAA. Please note that being a practicing full member of the NHAA does not automatically guarantee you health fund provider status. Different funds have different requirements and restrictions around provider status, so depending on your qualifications and other factors, there may be some funds that we cannot add you to.

The NHAA manages health fund provider status for members who are accepted providers. This includes initially assessing whether the member is eligible, then managing any updates, ensuring compliance with ongoing requierments such as first aid and insurance, and assiting with queries and problems. Each fund has their own requirements that eligible providers must adhere to and it is up to the provider to ensure that they are aware of these and comply with them. See below for links to indivdual funds requirements.

Read the Health Fund Info Sheet to find out how to become a recognised provider for naturopathy and Western herbal medicine, how we assist and what your responsibilites are.

See the Health Fund List for an overview of the health funds, which ones use provider numbers and where these come from.

Download, complete and send to us the Application for Practitioner Referral and Health Fund Provider Status if you are seeking access to the health funds.
